Pastoral Council Meeting Minutes (8-8-22)
Members Present:
Father Mike Roach, Dan Bacon, Deacon Chuck Koesterer, Yvette Lopez, Phil Baumert, Betsy Lewey, “RC” Arciga, Katie Klassen, John “Eddie” Baker, Kevin Casel, Sherri Porterfield, Patrick Schaub, and Ernie Collins.
The opening prayer was read by Dan Bacon
Ernie Collins Update:
Ernie Collins, Director of Religious Education, presented that Covid has put a damper on Religious Education. Ernie stated that we, as a church, are figuring how we can bring parishioners back to church and bring children back to religious education. Religious Education for kindergarten through fifth grade will be on Sundays from 9:10 am through 10:20 am. Faith Formation – Living out life through service – is a current focus. High School post-Confirmation is in process, however, not much is going on now, but making a connection with the school. The Saint James Carnival will be an opportunity to come together as a parish. On August 20-21, there will be a physical presence at the church to assist with registration for Religious Education and registration is also available via the website and will use QR codes.
Deacon Chuck Update:
Deacon Chuck stated that the Eucharistic Congress is scheduled for Saturday September 10 at 7:00 am and will end at 3:00 pm for adults and 10:00 pm for kids. Help for cleaning up would be appreciated. The Bishop will attend early in the afternoon for Benediction.
Katie Klassen Update:
Katie stated that the financials are looking well. The loan for the church is down to 1.7 million dollars. The gym floor has been stripped and re-finished, working to get new carpet strips for bottom of bleachers. Asphalt work on parking lot is underway. There are 2 new air conditioning units. The teachers came back to the school on 8-8-22. Classes will start at the school on 8-17-22. Halls have been painted. The upper rooms are being painted currently. Working on building a railing for the north side ramp into the Parish Hall. There are plumbing issues in the school and gym and the roof leaks in the middle school hallway.
Old Business:
Regarding the Emergency Program, Betsy Lewey did some research and expressed concern over liability and Dan Bacon stated that the Diocese is covered with Liability Insurance and Lou Angeles researched this as well. Emergency volunteers will not be vetted or trained and should not use equipment if they are not familiar with it. Nancy Streeter stated that we have 500 slots for parishioners to assist in various roles to conduct masses and 350 are taken. Betsy Lewey will submit a list of requested items and will compare against existing items and Katie Klassen will order the required items.
Ethnic Festival Update:
The parish will highlight 1 ethnic group per month and share insights from that group because the level of interest in an Ethnic Festival is uncertain at this point.
Ministry Survey Update:
Between 25 to 30 ministry leaders have responded and more responses are expected in September.
Hillcrest Update:
Yvette stated that there is a push for the youth to be involved, and has 4 families to coordinate with for assisting with repair work at Hillcrest. Yvette stated that she will have more to report regarding Hillcrest, in September.
Pastoral Council Elections Update:
Elections were held and:
Dan Bacon was elected as Chair.
Phil Baumert was elected as Vice-Chair
Patrick Schaub was elected as Secretary
Father Mike Update:
Father Mike Roach stated that the Saint James Parish is in need of a Facilities Manager, that we are proud of our school as enrollment should be good, we are hoping to have parishioners come back to the church to attend mass, we are proud of Ernie Collins, Katie Klassen, and all church staff for all of their hard work, and that we are looking forward to the Ministry Fair.
