- Cantor
The cantor has two primary roles, “both as a singer and a leader for congregational singing” (STL, 37). Cantors at St. James also serve as the psalmist. Cantors are expected to be able to sing and facilitate the correct pronunciation and diction of the text. As a minister of music, one must have the ability to proclaim the text with clarity and conviction, with sensitivity both to the text and to those who are listening. Cantors are regularly scheduled once a month. Cantors are expected to be well rehearsed and prepared before Mass. Rehearsals can be set up with the Director of Liturgy and Music at any time.
- Organ/Piano
While the human voice is the primary instrument used in the liturgy, the organ holds a pre-eminent place in the liturgy of the Catholic Church.Upon completion of our new church in 2019, we installed a custom 3 manuel, Johannus Ecclesia D-470. This magnificent organ was made possible by private donations. Like most Catholic churches in the United States we make use of the piano as a central instrument to lead and support congregational singing. The acquisition of our Baldwin Model L grand piano was made possible by the generous gift of the late Frances Mentch (April 13, 1919-October 27, 2020). St. James is activity seeking enthusiastic organists and pianists that would like to serve at weekend liturgies.
