Social Care Ministries at St. James include programs that help both the community and the people who attend our church.
Blood donors are people who understand the importance of giving blood to save lives. Since blood cannot be made in a lab, donors are very important for patients who need blood to live. St. James works with the Community Blood Center of Kansas City to hold six blood drives each year. These drives help provide blood and blood parts to local patients. Because you can donate whole blood every 56 days, going to all six drives lets you give as much as possible each year.
The blood drives usually happen on the last Tuesday of January, March, May, July, September, and November from 12:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sometimes, the date may change, so check the church bulletin, website, or Facebook page for the exact dates and how to sign up. To make an appointment, go to www.esavealifenow.org and use the sponsor code ‘stjames’. If you have questions about who can donate, call 1-800-688-0900.
To donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with a parent or guardian’s permission), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be healthy. Donors aged 16 to 18 may need to meet extra height and weight rules. Donating blood takes less than an hour, and one donation can help up to three patients. Together, we can save lives! For more details on donating, visit www.savealifenow.org.

This ministry helps the Liberty Meals on Wheels program by delivering meals to people who have trouble moving around in the Liberty area. The meals are made by Liberty Hospital. For many clients, these meals are the only hot, healthy food they get all day. Just as important, the deliveries give the clients a friendly person to see and someone to check on them during the week.
St. James provides one driver every Monday and Friday, and more drivers when needed. Volunteers pick up the meals at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty Fire Station #1, located at 200 W. Mississippi St. Each driver gets a clipboard with a map, a cooler with drinks, and a food container holding 2 to 6 meals to deliver. The route usually takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on how many deliveries there are.
This ministry is very rewarding for our community, and we are always looking for new volunteers to help.

On the fourth Monday of every month, St. James in Liberty helps by providing workers to serve a hot meal to about 180 people. These workers do not need to cook. They also help clean up afterward. The work time is from 3:30 to 7:15 pm. On the third Sunday of each month, after every Mass, people can sign up to work or donate money to the kitchen. One City Cafe is located just south of St. James Church in Kansas City at 3934 Troost.

The St. James community uses prayer to come together during hard times. People can send prayers to say thank you or to ask for help. Everyone is welcome to send their prayer requests to the ministry leader.
Prayer requests must be sent by email. Each request will be copied and shared with the name of the person who sent it, unless they ask to stay anonymous.

The mission of this ministry is to offer unconditional love and comfort to the people who receive our shawls. These shawls are made to wrap around, cover, and hug those who get them, giving them warmth and peace. Anyone who enjoys crocheting, knitting, or quilting can join and help provide comfort through the prayers said while making each shawl. Besides making shawls for comfort, we also give Baptismal Shawls to children who are newly baptized.
The St. James respect life ministry seeks to promote and protect human life from conception to natural death. Liturgy of the Word – Lectors
Our ministry provides Lectors for Liturgy of the Word for all Masses.
We do not meet on a regular basis but we do hold meetings as needed for instruction, refresher clinics, and orientation throughout the year.
We have been blessed with our ministry and currently have lectors scheduled for all Masses. If you are interested in becoming a Lector, all new Lectors are welcome to be called upon on a substitute basis.
We currently have about 60 Lectors within our ministry, of which 50 of those Lectors are active each month.
Good vocal skills and a good sense of presence are excellent qualities for Lectors to proclaim the Word. If you feel comfortable in a public setting you may be an excellent candidate to become a Lector. All parishioners are welcome to join us. The best time to sign up as a Lector would be during “Time and Talent” drives.
For more information you can contact us at the following information:
